Released on March 16, 2021, the American Kennel Club highlighted the most popular dog breeds from 2020. Each of these have unique characteristics, which earns them a spot on this prestigious list. Whichever your preference, you'll be sure to find a compatible companion for your family from this list.

  1. LABRADOR RETRIEVER: The Labrador Retriever hits the top of the list year after year as the most popular dog breed, according to the American Kennel Club's famous list. In fact, in 2017, the Labrador Retriever was on its 26th consecutive year as the number one dog breed! The lab continues to win for many reasons. As a med-sized dog, Labs typically weigh between 55-85 pounds. Their fur coats can be a variety of colors; shades of yellow, black, and chocolate. Labradors are friendly, social and easy-going. Labrador Retrievers are enthusiastic athletes and will never turn down a game of fetch. (It’s true! It’s in their name.) They love to be with their humans. Because of their loyal companionship, Labradors make great service dogs. Their life span averages 10 to 14 years.

  2. GERMAN SHEPHERDS: The German Shepherd comes in a close second on the AKC's annual list of the 10 most popular dog breeds. The German shepherd is the third most intelligent dog in the world, according to the AKC's annual list. Because of their quick wit and intelligence, German Shepherds are commonly used by the military and police force. Shepherds are easy to train; as a result, they serviced along side our military in World War I. GSP will devote themselves to their human. With this loyalty, comes a drive to protect and serve. They have an insatiable need to please their humans; therefore, are easy to train. Goldens are great family dogs and generally have no issues socializing with other dogs. A medium-sized breed, Golden Retrievers are a popular choice for athletic humans as they are always game for an adventure. Goldens are also very fond of water.

  4. FRENCH BULLDOGS: The French Bulldog is a trendy breed. This breed is particularly popular in major cities. Frenchies rank as the #1 breed in NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and West Palm Beach. City dwellers love Frenchies because of their small size and dynamic personality. Because of their territorial streak, French Bulldogs will keep a vigilant watch over their homes. They are not huge barkers, but if they do speak, you should listen! Although they don't make much barking noise, Frenchies create unique vocalization, French Bulldogs often make grunting and snorting noises. Last but not least, the French Bulldog comes standard with their famous "bat ears", making them simply irresistible.

Bulldogs are great family pets because of their docile nature and low-intensity activity state. With their stocky build, squishy face, and wrinkled brow, this distinctive breed has charmed their humans. Aside from their unmistakable looks, bulldogs are popular for their relaxed demeanor. They are particularly popular for apartment dwellers because they do not require as much exercise as other breeds. The low-key personality of the bulldog also makes them great with young children.

The reason they make the top 10 most list is because of their temperament. Beagles are very loyal dogs; frequently rated as the #1 family dog. Beagles are considered one of the friendliest breeds. If you're looking for a fun, lovable, small-sized dog, then the beagle is a great option. As part of the hound family, Beagles have great noses and can track for miles. Perfect for hunting small game, Beagles are a great choice for families that like the outdoors.

  7. POODLES: Poodles are fun and goofy; but also very intelligent. Poodles learn tricks and commands quickly. For this reason, it is common to see poodles winning competitions in everything from nose work to agility. They also make great companions for people with disabilities. Poodles are one of the few dog breeds that do not have fur. Instead, poodles have hair making them hypoallergenic, non-shedders (which is why they are breed with other dogs to make designer dogs). A fan favorite, Poodles come in 3 different sizes, standard at 50-60 pounds, miniature at 15-17 pounds, and toy, at 6-9 pounds. Poodles come in many different colors and because they grow hair, they have to be groomed regularly.

  8. ROTTWEILERS: Rottweilers were originally bred to protect cattle and livestock. In fact, this breed is happiest when they have a job. They are smart and eager to please. In modern-day society, Rottweilers are often given a variety of jobs; such as service dogs, therapy dogs, guide dogs, obedience competitors, and more. Because of their defensive nature, Rottweilers can be very protective of their family and home. If not raised properly their natural defensive instincts can make them less approachable to other dogs, but with obedience training and a designated pack leader, they are fiercely loyal and their companionship is unmatched.

  9. GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER: The name Pointer comes from their stance. This breed naturally uses their body to point; lowering their head, steadying their gaze, and then lifting a front paw as if pointing toward their prey. Used for hunting birds, German Shorthaired Pointers can easily find pheasant or quail that hide in thick brush. They are amazing swimmers. Their water-resistant coats repel debris as they swim; their spoon-shape and webbed paws help them glide through the water. Due to their innate nature to hunt and willingness to learn, the German Shorthaired can often be found outperforming other dogs in agility competitions and obstacle courses. It's no surprise that this breed continuously comes in “Best in Show" at the AKC Agility Tournament and remains one of the most popular dog breeds in the world.

  10. YORKSHIRE TERRIOR: The Yorkshire Terrier, often known as the Yorkie, is the smallest breed on this list, averaging around 7 pounds. Their size is one of the reasons this breed is beloved. The Yorkie an ideal pet for anyone with physical limitations, or anyone with compact living quarters. Another bonus of the Yorkie's size is they make great travel companions. From the grocery store to airplanes, Yorkies are the perfect travel buddy. Known to be feisty and vocal, Yorkies have no problem standing up for themselves. Overall, Yorkies love attention and make wonderful companions.
